John Murray Forbes is an American businessman. He was born in Bordeaux in February 1813. He died in Boston in October 1898. He was a railway magnate and president, in 1850s, of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad and Michigan Central Railroad.
Forbes was born to a wealthy and prominent family and immigrated to the U.S. as a boy. James Grant Forbes (his father) was a highly respected Scottish diplomat and founder of the Brahmin merchant-dynasty in Boston. After a short time, the family settled in Milton, Massachusetts. He was not a successful businessman, but his parents were. Forbes married Dorothy Murray, a daughter of a prominent Scottish family, in Boston in 1769. Forbes became one among the first landowners and investors in railroads in the United States during his time at Canton.

Francis Blackwell Forbes
Francis Blackwell Forbes is the son John Murray Forbes. He was a clergyman, and a member in good standing of the Forbes family. He was the greatgrandson of Rev. John Forbes, great-grandson of James Grant Forbes. He was also a pioneer of Chinese botany and was responsible to promote the Shanghai Country Club. He also wrote papers on Burlingame. Forbes' family moved to Europe in 1880s. Forbes joined Russell & Co. Forbes also started the Shanghai Steam Navigation Company, which operated flat-bottomed steamers along the Yangtze River.
Forbes was born on 11 August 1839 in New York City. His parents were John Murray Forbes (c1807-1885), and Anne Howell, (c1849-1865). On 8 May 1867, he married Isabel Clark in New York City. They had three sons, William Howell Forbes (1837-1896), Henry De Courcy Forbes (1849-1920), as well as Paul Revere Forbes (1836-1936). The family owned a number businesses in New York as well as abroad.
Robert Bennet Forbes
Robert Bennet Forbes is a sea captain and merchant for the China trade. He was born near Boston, Massachusetts on 18 September 1804. He studied briefly in France and then returned to Boston to complete secondary school. He was also active in the opium trade and shipbuilding. During his life, he was very generous, contributing time and money to charitable endeavors.

Forbes' papers include six boxes of loose papers, a bound diary, and an oversize folder. They include research materials and cover the years from 1817-1889. These papers contain correspondences and business records as well newspaper clippings and other documents that are related to his life.
